Blueair 503 Air Purifier

The Blueair 503 is good for any large room. Honestly this air purifier will work well in any room of a normal house. It cleans rooms up to 580 square feet. Unless you live in a mansion this will work in any room in your house.

Features

Blueair Air Purifier 503 Blueair 503

  • HEPAsilent filter
  • Optional activated carbon filter
  • All steel construction
  • Mechanical controls
  • Quiet operation

Type of Filter

The 503 uses an ionizer and a media. The ionizer charges any particles in the air. They stick to the fibers in the filter and are removed from the air you breathe. This system removes up to 99.97% of airborne particles 0.1 microns and bigger from the air. This will remove dust, dust mites, pollens, and other allergens. This is not as noisy as other purifiers because the fan and motor work less.

An optional activated carbon, smokestop, filter is available. It will remove chemicals and odors from the air.

To effectively remove odors or chemicals see Austin Air, IQAir, or AllerAir air purifiers.

Maintenance Cost

The filter in the Blueair 503 will last about 6 months. The warranty requires you to replace the filter every 6 months. So, even if the filter is still good, you will replace it anyway.

  • It's $80 for the regular filter.
  • It's $150 for the smokestop filter.

We usually recommend the smokestop filters. However, this means it will cost you $300 a year to replace the filters. This can get very expensive, very quickly. Even if you stick to the regular filter it will still cost you $160 a year. This is something to think carefully about before you buy this air purifier.

Technical Details

This will clean as room that is 580 square feet. That is a pretty decent size room. It is a room 25 feet by 23 feet. In rooms this size this machine will exchange the air 5 times.

We recommend 6 exchanges an hour so 5 is pretty close. Using it in a smaller will will help you get 6 or more exchanges and get cleaner air to boot. In practice, this will work well in any room in your house.

This has a fantastic CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) of:

  • Smoke 375
  • Dust 375
  • Pollen 375

It has a 4 speed fan. The lowest speed is pretty quiet. The higher speeds are noisier.

The 503 measures 20 inches X 13 inches X 26 inches (L X W X H). It weighs about 35 pounds.

It comes with a 5 year limited warranty on material and workmanship. The filter must be replaced every 6 months or the warranty is void. Blueair has a filter subscription service. They will automatically ship you a new filter every 6 months.

Our Recommendations

This is a good air purifier for cleaning a large open space. It will work to clean any room in your house. You can put it in the living room, dining room, or a bedroom.

The optional smokestop filter is usually a good idea. We recommend them in the smaller Blueair air purifiers. We think with this model the replacement cost are too high. You would have to spend $300 a year on new filters. If you are really concerned about smoke and odors YOu should look into a different air purifier.

The maintenance cost is on the high side, especially with a smokestop filter. We see this as a large drawback with this air purifier.

It will do its job very efficiently. It will provide you with very clean air, free of allergens and pollution. You have to decide if the cost of replacing the filters each year is worth it to you.

In our opinion, this is a great purifier. It works well and it is quiet. We think that anyone would benefit from this air purifier. It will help anyone with allergies or asthma.

While we know this machine works well, we do have some reservations. The biggest drawback we see with this machine is the replacement cost. Honestly, we would not buy this one for ourselves because of the cost of the new filters.
